چکیده

We study the probability that three GRBs (980425, 030329, 031203) are found within z = 0.17, given the luminosity functions consistent with the logN − logS relationship for classical cosmological bursts (i.e., those observed by BATSE). We show that, in order for the probability of these three low-z events to be non-negligible (thus making it more likely that they belong to the same class of the classical cosmological bursts), the bursts’ luminosity function must be a broken powerlaw. By reasoning in analogy with beamed AGNs, we show that observations are consistent with the expectations if GRB 980425 and GRB 031203 are indeed normal bursts seen sideways. Within this model, no bright burst within z = 0.17 should be observed by a HETE–like instrument within the next ∼ 20 yr. Subject headings: gamma rays: bursts

The attempt to secure conclusive, spectroscopic evidence for the GRB/SN connection has been a central theme in most GRB observing time proposals since the discovery of the very unusual GRB 980425 associated with the peculiar type Ib/c SN 1998bw. GRB 030329 provided this evidence to everybody’s satisfaction. In this contribution we show the results of a spectroscopic campaign of the supernova as...

In these proceedings, I discuss recent progress in understanding the nature of cosmic gamma-ray bursts (GRB), with the focus on the apparent relation of several GRBs with an energetic subclass of stellar explosions , type Ib/c core-collapse supernovae. This relation provides the strong case that the GRB phenomenon is connected with the final stages of massive star evolution and possibly with th...

We report the discovery of optical and radio afterglow emission from the extremely soft X-ray flash, XRF 020903. Our spectroscopic observations provide the first redshift for an X-ray flash, thereby setting the distance scale for these events. At z = 0.251, XRF 020903 is one of the nearest cosmic explosions ever detected, second only to the recent GRB 030329 and the unusual GRB 980425/SN 1998bw...

We report 139 photometric observations through the B, V, and I filters of the supernova SN 1998bw, an object which is associated with the Gamma-Ray Burst GRB 980425. Detailed light curves of this unique supernova can be compared to theoretical models, so we report here our light curve for 123 days between 27 June 1998 and 28 October 1998. The light curve of SN 1988bw is consistent with those of...

We present the first high resolution (R=20000–45000, corresponding to 14 km/s at 4200Å to 6.6 km/s at 9000Å ) observations of the optical afterglow of Gamma Ray Bursts. GRB 020813 and GRB 021004 were observed by UVES@VLT 22.19 hours and 13.52 hours after the trigger, respectively. These spectra show that the inter–stellar matter of the GRB host galaxies is complex, with many components contribu...
